Candidate Information

Please make sure you read this information in its entirety and ask any questions you may have.

Congratulations! You have been elected by your fellow Scouts as a candidate for membership in the Order of the Arrow. Your fellow Scouts must think highly of you. They have chosen you to be inducted into Scouting’s National Honor Society. It is truly an honor to be chosen for membership in the Order of the Arrow.

You are about to embark on an incredible journey. The Ordeal is an important part of the Order of the Arrow membership process and the next step on your journey. The purpose of the Order of the Arrow and the symbols of the Ordeal will be explained to you at the Ordeal. You must arrive at the Ordeal prior to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, but please do not arrive before 5:30 p.m.  Be sure to bring a copy of your BSA Health and Medical Record (physical) parts A and B. The Ordeal will conclude no later than 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. You need to stay through the entire event to complete your Ordeal so please plan accordingly.

The cost for the weekend covers the cost of your Order of the Arrow sash, a current Allohak Menewi lodge flap, an OA handbook, weekend food, and your membership dues for the remainder of the calendar year. Following your induction, you will have the opportunity to purchase other lodge merchandize like t-shirts, hoodies, and patches at the lodge trading post.

Here is some important information for you and a list of what you will need to bring with you for the weekend:


There will be a safety check of candidates prior to heading out to begin the Ordeal.  Any Scout deemed unprepared to begin the Ordeal will be given the opportunity find the necessary resources (borrow from friends or current OA members) to complete the Ordeal.  If resources cannot be acquired the candidate must sit out until the next scheduled Ordeal.

For Friday Night


  • BSA Health and Medical Form Parts A & B
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Ground Cloth or Tarp
  • Warm Clothes
  • Extra Blankets (cold weather only)
  • Flashlight
  • Water bottle
  • Rain Gear
  • Boots

For Saturday

  • Work Clothes
  • Boots or appropriate work shoes
  • Work Gloves
  • Water Bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Rain Gear
  • Shower Gear
  • Tent
  • Full Scout Field Uniform (Class A)

For Sunday

  • Full Scout Field Uniform (Class A)

Food will be provided throughout the weekend. If you have any special health concerns or dietary needs, please give us the specifics of your needs when you register. For adults who may be attending the Ordeal, any power tools that you may need, such as drills, saws, etc., will be provided for you if you will need to use them.

It is important for you to understand that you have one year from the time of your election to complete your Ordeal.  After one year, you must be reelected by your fellow Scouts in order to participate in an Ordeal. There are numerous Ordeal opportunities offered in the fall and spring of each year in different parts of the Laurel Highlands Council.
